This study aimed to identify and determine the level of factors associated with the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of oral health professionals working in Primary Health Care (PHC) in Brazil. A cross-sectional survey was carried out among 96 dentists and 65 dental assistants working in the Family Health Strategy (FHS) in six municipalities in the metropolitan area of Salvador (BA), Brazil. The HRQoL was evaluated using the 36-item Short Form Health Survey Questionnaire (SF-36). Higher mean scores in the SF-36 physical component summary were associated with younger age, post-graduate education in public health, and frequent leisure time. The mental component summary was associated with frequent leisure time, > 40 weekly working hours, suitable dental offices, satisfaction with colleagues, and satisfaction with working in PHC. The HRQoL level of oral health professionals working in primary health care in PHC in Brazil was comparable to those found in the available literature and associated with several modifiable factors. Incidentally, a literature search found few studies using the SF-36 to assess the HRQoL of oral health workers, and those found were produced outside the main scientific centers.


O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar e determinar o nível de fatores associados à qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde (QVRS) de profissionais de saúde bucal que atuam na Atenção Primária à Saúde (APS) no Brasil. Foi realizado um estudo de corte transversal com 96 cirurgiões-dentistas e 65 auxiliares em saúde bucal que atuam na Estratégia Saúde da Família (ESF) em seis municípios da região metropolitana de Salvador (BA), Brasil. A QVRS foi avaliada usando o 36-item Short Form Health Survey Questionnaire (SF-36). Escores médios mais altos no resumo do componente físico do SF-36 foram associadas a idade mais jovem, pós-graduação em saúde pública e tempo de lazer frequente. O resumo do componente mental foi associado a tempo de lazer frequente, > 40 horas semanais de trabalho, consultórios odontológicos adequados, satisfação com os colegas e satisfação em trabalhar na APS. O nível de QVRS dos profissionais de saúde bucal que atuam na APS no Brasil foi comparável aos encontrados na literatura disponível e associado a vários fatores modificáveis. Incidentalmente, uma pesquisa bibliográfica encontrou poucos estudos que utilizam o SF-36 para avaliar a QVRS de trabalhadores da saúde bucal; e os encontrados foram produzidos fora dos principais centros científicos.


El objetivo de este estudio fue identificar y determinar el nivel de los factores asociados a la calidad de vida relacionada con la salud (CVRS) de los profesionales de salud bucal que actúan en la Atención Primaria de Salud en Brasil. Se realizó un estudio transversal con 96 cirujano dentista y 65 auxiliares de salud bucal que actúan en la Estrategia Salud de la Familia en seis municipios de la región metropolitana de Salvador, Brasil. La CVRS se evaluó mediante el 36-item Short Form Health Survey Questionnaire (SF-36). Las puntuaciones medias más altas en el resumen del componente físico del SF-36 se asociaron con una edad más joven, títulos de posgrado en salud pública y tiempo libre frecuente. El resumen del componente mental se asoció con tiempo libre frecuente, > 40 horas de trabajo por semana, consultorios dentales adecuados, satisfacción con los colegas y satisfacción con el trabajo en la Atención Primaria de Salud. El nivel de CVRS de los profesionales de la salud bucal que actúan en la Atención Primaria de Salud en Brasil fue comparable a los encontrados en la literatura disponible y se asoció a varios factores modificables. Una búsqueda bibliográfica encontró pocos estudios que utilizan el SF-36 para evaluar la CVRS de los trabajadores de la salud bucal; y los encontrados estaban fuera de los principales centros científicos.

PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate longitudinal associations between sleep duration and cardiorespiratory fitness, in adolescents. METHODS: Sleep duration was self-reported and cardiorespiratory fitness was assessed by the 20 m shuttle run test, both at baseline and follow-up (2-year follow-up). Participants were 734 Northern Portuguese adolescents (349 girls), aged 14.6 ± 1.8 years, from the LabMed study. RESULTS: Significant decreases were found between baseline and follow-up for sleep duration, whereas for cardiorespiratory fitness there was an increase. Adolescents with short sleep duration at baseline had lower cardiorespiratory fitness at follow-up, comparing to those meeting the sleep guidelines (odds ratio [OR] = 0.506, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.326-0.785; p = .002 for whole week; OR = 0.597, 95% CI: 0.407-0.875; p = .008 for weekdays). Girls who were short sleepers at baseline had lower odds of having a healthy cardiorespiratory fitness at follow-up, comparing to those meeting the sleep guidelines (OR = 0.311, 95% CI: 0.158-0.613; p < .001 for whole week; OR = 0.469, 95% CI: 0.262-0.838; p = .011 for weekdays). No significant associations between sleep duration and cardiorespiratory fitness were found for boys. DISCUSSION: There was a significant longitudinal association between short sleep duration and lower cardiorespiratory fitness levels, particularly in girls. Future interventions targeting adolescents' sleep duration should acknowledge behavioral differences between genders, as well as different behaviors adopted by boys ang girls, specifically on weekends.

In this study, we tested the prediction that sleep regularity would be lower in adolescents exposed to late evening electric light (LEEL) than in those without exposure to it. The Sleep Regularity Index was calculated based on actigraph recordings from adolescents living in rural communities in Argentina and Brazil that were either exposed to LEEL or not. The effect of the LEEL on sleep variables was tested using linear models considering sex and age, as well as accounting for the differences between countries. Sleep onset was delayed, sleep duration shortened, and Sleep Regularity Index was 4 [1-8] points lower in the group exposed to LEEL (p = .0176, eta2 =0.13). Our results show that beyond sleep phase and duration, which are known to be affected by LEEL in this age group, sleep irregularity should also be considered as an important outcome variable when assessing the adverse effects of evening light on adolescents.

Background: This article identifies the factors associated with burnout among dentists in the state of Bahia, Brazil, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional study, conducted between November 2020 and February 2021, of 251 dentists, selected by snowball sampling. Sociodemographic, occupational, and epidemiological information was collected in an electronic form. Burnout was evaluated through the Maslach Burnout Inventory; anxiety through the Beck Anxiety Inventory; and quality of life through the WHOQol-BREF questionnaire. Multiple linear regression was used to identify factors associated with variations in levels of the three burnout dimensions. Results: The mean levels of the burnout dimensions were: Emotional Exhaustion: 28.9 ± 8.9 (SD); Depersonalization = 8.2 ± 6.3; and Personal Accomplishment: 28.0 ± 6.2. The proportion of professionals with high Emotional Exhaustion (≥ 30 cut-off score), high Depersonalization (≥ 12 cut-off score), and low Personal Accomplishment (≤ 33 cut-off score) were 43.4%, 26.3% and 81.3%, respectively. Burnout components were associated with high anxiety; lower levels of the physical, psychological, social relations, and environmental dimensions of quality of life; less time working as a dentist; increased alcohol consumption during the pandemic, feeling safe when using personal protective equipment, and support from work fellows. Conclusion: The dentists investigated showed moderate levels of Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalization, and very low levels of Personal Accomplishment. The prevention and mitigation of burnout syndrome among dentists during a pandemic should consider several factors, such as quality of life, amount of time in the profession, use of personal protective equipment, support from fellow dentists, and alcohol consumption.

Acute cerebral dysfunction is a pathological state common in severe infections and a pivotal determinant of long-term cognitive outcomes. Current evidence indicates that a loss of synaptic contacts orchestrated by microglial activation is central in sepsis-associated encephalopathy. However, the upstream signals that lead to microglial activation and the mechanism involved in microglial-mediated synapse dysfunction in sepsis are poorly understood. This study investigated the involvement of the NLRP3 inflammasome in microglial activation and synaptic loss related to sepsis. We demonstrated that septic insult using the cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) model induced the expression of NLRP3 inflammasome components in the brain, such as NOD-, LRR-, and pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3), apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a C-terminal caspase recruitment domain (ASC), caspase-1, and IL-1ß. Immunostaining techniques revealed increased expression of the NLRP3 inflammasome in microglial cells in the hippocampus of septic mice. Meanwhile, an in vitro model of primary microglia stimulated with LPS exhibited an increase in mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, NLRP3 complex recruitment, and IL-1ß release. Pharmacological inhibition of NLRP3, caspase-1, and mitochondrial ROS all decreased IL-1ß secretion by microglial cells. Furthermore, we found that microglial NLRP3 activation is the main pathway for IL-1ß-enriched microvesicle (MV) release, which is caspase-1-dependent. MV released from LPS-activated microglia induced neurite suppression and excitatory synaptic loss in neuronal cultures. Moreover, microglial caspase-1 inhibition prevented neurite damage and attenuated synaptic deficits induced by the activated microglial MV. These results suggest that microglial NLRP3 inflammasome activation is the mechanism of IL-1ß-enriched MV release and potentially synaptic impairment in sepsis.

We aimed to determine the prevalence of anxiety and to identify associated factors among multi-professional residents in Brazil during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional study included a sample of 752 multi-professional residents selected by snowball technique. Symptoms of anxiety were measured by the Beck anxiety inventory scale (≥ 16 cut-off). We used WHOQOL-BREF to access the health-related quality of life and the Maslach Burnout Inventory to measure the burnout syndrome. PR and respective 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using the Poisson regression model. The prevalence of anxiety was 41.2% (310/752). Some variables were strongly associated with anxiety: afraid of getting COVID-19; extra work demand during COVID-19 pandemic; sweating/wheezing/increased heart rate during work; feeling safe when using personal protective equipment at work, and psychological support from residence preceptors. Residents with symptoms of anxiety showed high emotional exhaustion at work (36.6 ± 9.6 vs. 24.7 ± 10.7, P = 0.001) and depersonalization (8.9 ± 6.0 vs. 5.6 ± 4.9, P = 0.001). Correlations coefficients between emotional exhaustion versus Physical WHOQOL-BREF and between emotional exhaustion versus Psychological WHOQOL-BREF were significantly lower among residents without anxiety (P = 0.027 and P = 0,03, respectively). The prevalence of anxiety was high and strongly associated with several variables, particularly with being afraid of getting COVID-19, the perception of workload, somatization (sweating, wheezing and increased heart rate during work), feeling unsafe when using personal protective equipment, and lack of psychological support from residence preceptors. Anxiety was associated with increased emotional exhaustion and depersonalization and low health-related quality of life during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. Low WHOQOL-BREF environment domain, and high emotional exhaustion MBI domain increased the chances of presenting symptoms of anxiety.

This work presents a long-term follow-up (300 days) of rats after a single intravenous injection of DMSA-coated magnetite nanoparticles (DMSA-MNP). The animals were systematically evaluated by hematological, biochemical, and ultrasound examinations, monitoring the same animal over time. In addition, oxidative stress evaluation, DMSA-MNP biodistribution, computerized tomography for ex vivo organs, and histopathology analysis were performed at the end of the experiment period. Overall, DMSA-MNP administration did not cause serious damage to the rats' health over the course of 300 days post-administration. All animals presented hematological parameters within the normal limits, and no alterations on serum creatinine, urea, ALT, and AST were related to DMSA-MNP administration. Liver and spleen showed no important alterations in any of the examinations. The kidneys of treated animals displayed intermittent pelvis dilation at ultrasound analysis, but without damage to the organ parenchyma after 300 days. The lungs of treated animals presented a light interalveolar septal thickening, but the animals did not present any clinical respiratory symptom. Nanoparticles were not detected in the vital organs of treated animals 300 days after administration. This work represents the first assessment of the long-term effects of DMSA-MNP and goes a step further on the safety of its use for biomedical applications.

Resumen Los profesionales de la salud de las Unidades de Cuidados Intensivos (UCI) enfrentan situaciones de sufrimiento humano, competitividad y demanda, que podrían perjudicar su calidad de vida y su salud mental. El objetivo del estudio fue describir los trastornos mentales comunes y la calidad de vida relacionada con la salud en profesionales de la salud de la UCI en Salvador, Brasil. Este estudio transversal con 195 profesionales utilizó un cuestionario sociodemográfico y laboral, el Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20) de trastornos mentales comunes y el 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36v2) de calidad de vida relacionada con la salud. El 29.7 % de los profesionales presentaron trastornos mentales comunes, especialmente entre profesionales de enfermería (RP = 2.28; IC 1.19-4.39; p = .007). La calidad de vida relacionada con la salud para todos los profesionales estuvo disminuida, principalmente en función social (44.25 ± 10.15) y rol emocional (45.86 ± 10.58). El SRQ-20 correlacionó fuertemente con los dominios dolor corporal (r = -.502), salud general (r = -.526), vitalidad (r = -.656), función social (r = -.608), salud mental (r = -.631) y el componente de salud mental (r = -.638) del SF-36v2 (p < .01). Los profesionales con trastornos mentales comunes mostraron una calidad de vida relacionada con la salud más deteriorada, esencialmente en dominios del componente de salud mental, y refirieron también dolor corporal. Es necesario discutir e implementar estrategias de evaluación, prevención y promoción de la salud mental entre los profesionales de las UCI para que sean consideradas dentro de las políticas de salud laboral.

Uremic toxins are a heterogeneous group of molecules that accumulate in the body due to the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). These toxins are associated with kidney dysfunction and the development of comorbidities in patients with CKD, being only partially eliminated by dialysis therapies. Importantly, drugs used in clinical treatments may affect the levels of uremic toxins, their tissue disposition, and even their elimination through the interaction of both with proteins such as albumin and cell membrane transporters. In this context, protein-bound uremic toxins (PBUTs) are highlighted for their high affinity for albumin, the most abundant serum protein with multiple binding sites and an ability to interact with drugs. Membrane transporters mediate the cellular influx and efflux of various uremic toxins, which may also compete with drugs as substrates, and both may alter transporter activity or expression. Therefore, this review explores the interaction mechanisms between uremic toxins and albumin, as well as membrane transporters, considering their potential relationship with drugs used in clinical practice.

Introducción: Existen pocos estudios sobre los trastornos mentales comunes y calidad de vida relacionada con la salud mental en trabajadores de salud bucal. Objetivo: Describir los trastornos mentales comunes y la calidad de vida relacionada con la salud mental en trabajadores de equipos de salud bucal en atención primaria de salud del Sistema Único de Salud de la Región Metropolitana de Salvador de Bahía, Brasil. Métodos: Estudio transversal y descriptivo, que utilizó el Cuestionario de declaración de síntomas para evaluar trastornos mentales comunes, el Cuestionario de salud para calidad de vida relacionada con la salud y un cuestionario de caracterización sociodemográfica. Resultados: Conformaron la muestra 161 profesionales (59,6 por ciento odontólogos y 40,4 por ciento auxiliares de salud bucal). El promedio de la puntuación para Cuestionario de declaración de síntomas fue mayor para los odontólogos (p = 0,032). Los dominios de salud mental del Cuestionario de salud fueron menores y significativos en odontólogos. Tres factores del Cuestionario de declaración de síntomas presentaron alta correlación negativa con los dominios de salud mental del Cuestionario de salud. Conclusiones: Los odontólogos presentaron mayores síntomas de trastornos mentales comunes y deterioro de la calidad de vida relacionada con la salud mental que los auxiliares de salud bucal, siendo necesarias estrategias de promoción de la salud mental para trabajadores de los equipos de salud bucal(AU)


Introduction: Few studies are available about common mental disorders and mental health-related quality of life among dental healthcare providers. Objective: Describe the common mental disorders and the mental health-related quality of life of members of oral health teams from the primary health care section of the Unified Health System in the Metropolitan Region of Salvador de Bahia, Brazil. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted based on the Symptom reporting questionnaire for the evaluation of common mental disorders, the Health questionnaire about health-related quality of life, and a sociodemographic characterization questionnaire. Results: The study sample was composed of 161 professionals, of whom 59.6 percent were dentists and 40.4 percent were dental auxiliaries. Dentists obtained a higher average score in the Symptom reporting questionnaire (p = 0.032), whereas their scores in the mental health domains of the Health questionnaire were lower and significant. Three factors in the Symptom reporting questionnaire exhibited a high negative correlation with the mental health domains of the Health questionnaire. Conclusions: Dentists presented greater symptoms of common mental disorders and mental health-related quality of life deterioration than dental auxiliaries. It is therefore necessary to implement mental health promotion strategies aimed at members of oral health teams(AU)

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) diagnosis is performed on serum samples, but the access to this diagnosis is difficult in low-income regions. The use of dried blood spot (DBS) samples does not require special structure for collection, storage or transport. This study evaluates the use of DBS for detection, quantification and sequencing of HBV DNA using in-house techniques. Two study groups were included: 92 HBsAg + individuals and 49 negative controls. Serum and DBS samples were submitted to quantitative and qualitative in-house PCR for S/pol genes, sequencing and phylogenetic analyses. Total of 84 serum samples were successfully amplified. Of them, 63 paired DBS were also positive in qualitative PCR. Qualitative PCR in DBS presented a sensitivity of 75% and specificity of 100% (Kappa = 0.689). Quantitative PCR in DBS presented a detection limit of 852.5 copies/mL (250 IU/mL), sensitivity of 77.63% and specificity of 100% (Kappa = 0.731). A total of 63 serum samples and 36 DBS samples were submitted to sequencing, revealing the circulation of genotypes A (65.08%), D (4.8%), E (3.2%) and F (27%) with 100% of correspondence between serum and DBS. All sequenced samples displayed polymorphisms in HBsAg gene. An HIV-coinfected patient presented the rtM204V/I-rtL180M double resistance mutation in serum and DBS. In conclusion, DBS is an alternative to detect, quantify and characterize HBV DNA, being a possibility of increasing diagnosis in low-income settings, closing gaps in HBV control.

Adolescence is a phase with physiological and behavioral changes. One of them occurs in the sleep-wake cycle pattern, manifested by a phase delay. However, morning school start time can decrease sleep duration during weekdays, impairing adolescent cognitive performance and well-being. Adolescents of different ages and educational level might suffer the impact of academic demand on sleep-wake cycle and cognition differently. Thus, the aim of this study is to compare the sleep habits and quality, sleepiness upon awakening and attention components among adolescents in the first years of high school and college. 71 adolescents participated in the study (45 girls and 26 boys), 44 enrolled in high school morning classes (G1 - 15.5±0.7 years), from a private school, and 27 college students enrolled in morning classes (G2 - 18.8±1.04 years), from biosciences courses from a public institution. The groups did not differ in bedtime, get up time, time in bed and sleep irregularity. However, both groups showed differences according to the day of the week, bedtime and get up time became later and time in bed extended on weekends. G1 presented worse sleep quality and regarding attention, showed higher percentage of omissions in all components and worse performance in sustained attention (ANOVA, p<0.05). The poorer sleep quality of high school adolescents and reduced attention may have a negative effect on school performance. Additional studies are needed to investigate the causes of these differences between these two educational levels.

Cardiorenal syndrome (CRS) is described as primary dysfunction in the heart culminating in renal injury or vice versa. CRS can be classified into five groups, and uremic toxin (UT) accumulation is observed in all types of CRS. Protein-bound uremic toxin (PBUT) accumulation is responsible for permanent damage to the renal tissue, and mainly occurs in CRS types 3 and 4, thus compromising renal function directly leading to a reduction in the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and/or subsequent proteinuria. With this decrease in GFR, patients may need renal replacement therapy (RRT), such as peritoneal dialysis (PD). PD is a high-quality and home-based dialysis therapy for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and is based on the semi-permeable characteristics of the peritoneum. These patients are exposed to factors which may cause several modifications on the peritoneal membrane. The presence of UT may harm the peritoneum membrane, which in turn can lead to the formation of extracellular vesicles (EVs). EVs are released by almost all cell types and contain lipids, nucleic acids, metabolites, membrane proteins, and cytosolic components from their cell origin. Our research group previously demonstrated that the EVs can be related to endothelial dysfunction and are formed when UTs are in contact with the endothelial monolayer. In this scenario, this review explores the mechanisms of EV formation in CRS, uremia, the peritoneum, and as potential biomarkers in peritoneal dialysis.

RESUMEN

Over the development of eukaryotic cells, intrinsic mechanisms have been developed in order to provide the ability to defend against aggressive agents. In this sense, a group of proteins plays a crucial role in controlling the production of several proteins, guaranteeing cell survival. The heat shock proteins (HSPs), are a family of proteins that have been linked to different cellular functions, being activated under conditions of cellular stress, not only imposed by thermal variation but also toxins, radiation, infectious agents, hypoxia, etc. Regarding pathological situations as seen in cardiorenal syndrome (CRS), HSPs have been shown to be important mediators involved in the control of gene transcription and intracellular signaling, in addition to be an important connector with the immune system. CRS is classified as acute or chronic and according to the first organ to suffer the injury, which can be the heart (CRS type 1 and type 2), kidneys (CRS type 3 and 4) or both (CRS type 5). In all types of CRS, the immune system, redox balance, mitochondrial dysfunction, and tissue remodeling have been the subject of numerous studies in the literature in order to elucidate mechanisms and propose new therapeutic strategies. In this sense, HSPs have been targeted by researchers as important connectors between kidney and heart. Thus, the present review has a focus to present the state of the art regarding the role of HSPs in the pathophysiology of cardiac and renal alterations, as well their role in the kidney-heart axis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether the use of anti-inflammatory or antibiotic in the postoperative period modifies pain in children undergoing tonsillectomy. METHODS: 225 children who underwent cold knife tonsillectomy ± adenoidectomy were randomized into five groups, receiving #1 metamizole/acetaminophen, #2 amoxicillin, #3 ibuprofen, #4 prednisolone, or #5 amoxicillin plus prednisolone. All groups received oral analgesics (metamizole/acetaminophen) to use as needed. Pain was monitored during the 7 days following surgery using the Parents' Postoperative Pain Measurement (PPPM) and the Faces Pain Scale - Revised (FPS-R). Pain was also indirectly evaluated by the dose of analgesics administered on each day and by the time needed to return to a solid diet. RESULTS: After losses (24%), 170 individuals were submitted for analysis. Multiple comparisons demonstrated that the evolution of pain between the different groups, as matched day-per-day, was not significantly different by either PPPM or FPS-R (p > 0.05). The instances of analgesic intake were also similar in all the groups (p > 0.05), as was the return to solid food ingestion (p = 0.41). All groups presented a similar standard of clinical improvement at intervals of 2 days (p < 0.01). Independent of postoperative pain management, patients developed significant pain up to the day 4 following surgery. CONCLUSION: The addition of amoxicillin, ibuprofen, prednisolone, or amoxicillin and prednisolone does not modify postoperative pain in children undergoing cold-knife tonsillectomy. Special pain control should be performed on the first 4 days following tonsillectomy in children.

Influenza A virus (IAV) infection is a common cause of acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). Since macrophage inflammatory protein 1 α, a chemokine that acts through CC-chemokine receptor (CCR)-5, appears elevated in COPD patients' airways, we evaluated whether CCR5 antagonist Maraviroc could inhibit the exacerbated lung inflammatory response noted after IAV H1N1 infection in mice exposed to cigarette smoke (Cs). C57BL/6 mice, subjected or not to Cs inhalation for 11 days, were infected with H1N1 at day 7. Maraviroc (10 mg/kg) or dexamethasone (1 mg/kg) were given in a therapeutic schedule, followed by the analyses of lung function, survival rate, and inflammatory changes. As compared to mice subjected to Cs or H1N1 alone, the insult combination significantly worsened airway obstruction, neutrophil infiltration in the airways, and the survival rate. All changes were sensitive to Maraviroc but not dexamethasone. Maraviroc also reduced the accumulation of neutrophils and macrophages as well as CXCL1 production in the lung tissue, and serum levels of IL-6, whereas comparable viral titers in the lungs were noted in all infected groups. Collectively, these findings suggest that Maraviroc oral treatment could be an effective therapy for controlling acute exacerbations of respiratory diseases such as COPD.

OBJECTIVE: to compare daily light exposure, activity-rest rhythm, sleep-wake cycle (SWC) and attention in Brazilian students living in different levels of urbanization. METHODS: 115 adolescents (74 girls), aged 14-18 years (mean 15.5 ± 0.7 years), from the first years of high school have participated. The SWC was evaluated by actimetry and a Sleep Diary for 10 days. Besides, the "Health and Sleep" Questionnaire, the Morningness and Eveningness Scale for adolescents, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Pediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scale were answered. Attention was assessed by a Continuous Performance Task. RESULTS: In the less urbanized region, there were a greater exposure to light during the day accompanied by a higher proportion of morning-types and less occurrence of excessive daytime sleepiness. Otherwise, in the more urbanized region, adolescents showed a trend to sleep less in weekdays and presented more irregularity in sleep duration between weekdays and weekend, with 83 ± 15% of sleep efficiency, 01:04 ± 1:30 h of WASO and 7 ± 6.7 awakenings per night on the weekdays, suggestive of poor sleep quality. Despite of this, they showed better attentional performance: more correct responses (tonic and phasic alertness, and sustained attention) and less omissions (for all components). Regardless of the degree of urbanization, there was partial sleep deprivation, irregular sleep schedules and poor sleep quality in adolescents. CONCLUSIONS: The daily light exposure and activity-rest profiles, SWC and attention in adolescents varied according to the degree of urbanization. Besides, the negative impacts of early school starting times leading to sleep deprivation, irregular sleep times and poor sleep quality were observed irrespective of the degree of urbanization, reinforcing that the early school starting time at morning is a strong temporal challenge for teenagers, having negative impacts on cognition and academic performance.

Clostridioides difficile is a Gram-positive, spore-forming, anaerobic bacillus which is the leading cause of health-care-associated infective diarrhea. The rising incidence of antibiotic resistance in pathogens such as C. difficile makes researches on alternative antibacterial products very important, especially those exploring natural products like propolis. Brazilian Red Propolis, found in the Northeast region of Brazil, is composed by products from regional plants that have the antimicrobial properties. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro activity of Brazilian Red Propolis (BRP) against C. difficile strains in planktonic and biofilm forms. The susceptibility of four strains of C. difficile to BRP was analyzed by broth microdilution method and vancomycin was included as control drug. BRP-exposed C. difficile cells were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Then, the effects of BRP on growing and mature C. difficile biofilms were also evaluated. BRP minimum inhibitory concentration was 625 µg/mL against all tested strains, while vancomycin MIC range was 0.5-2 µg/mL. SEM showed the loss of homogeneity in bacterial cell wall and cell fragmentation, after BRP-exposure. BRP, at MIC, reduced (P < 0.05) the biomass, matrix proteins and matrix carbohydrates of growing biofilms, and, at 8xMIC, reduced (P < 0.05) the biomass and matrix proteins of mature biofilms. The present study demonstrated that BRP inhibits planktonic growth, damages cell wall, decreases biofilm growth and harms mature biofilms of C. difficile.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this systematic review was to summarize the evidence on the associations between the sleep duration or sleep quality and cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness in children and adolescents aged 6-19 years. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta- analyses (PRISMA) and was registered with the international prospective register of systematic reviews PROSPERO network. Three databases (PubMed, SPORTDiscus and Science Direct) were searched until October 2019 for scientific articles concerning sleep duration, sleep quality and physical fitness. RESULTS: Six articles, including 5797 participants, from 11 different countries, were included in the current systematic review. CONCLUSION: Longer periods of sleep and better sleep quality were associated with higher levels of physical fitness.
